About FOCUS

Based in Dallas, Texas, FOCUS Learning Academy provides a positive educational environment that enhances self-esteem, welcomes unique learning styles and individual talents, and promotes academic success by incorporating a multisensory approach to reading instruction, while fostering sensitivity to cultural attributes that ensure optimal development of the whole individual.

Founded in 1999, FOCUS Learning Academy serves students who have experienced academic difficulty in their educational career.  Our school serves not only students with significant learning difficulties but also normal/traditional learners and learning-gifted students who may not have had access to a customized learning environment to address their particular requirements. 

FOCUS Learning Academy delivers educational programs that can truly "focus" on each student and their individual learning styles and requirements.  To accomplish this level of educational development FOCUS Learning Academy uses diagnostic testing and evaluation with the objective of discovering the learning styles and teaching methods that work best for each student - whether that student is a normal/traditional learner, learning-disabled, or learning-gifted.

With an emphasis on diagnosis and customized teaching plus a strong caring environment it is the goal of FOCUS Learning Academy to produce the best possible results for each student.

Often it is the learning different student - diagnosed or undiagnosed - sometimes two to three years behind academically and who has previously failed to reach his/her potential in school that enrolls at FOCUS Learning Academy.  In addition to learning different students, students who choose to enroll at FOCUS Learning Academy often come to our school after having been academically underserved and who, as a result, are now operating significantly below grade level.  FOCUS Learning Academy strives diligently to assure that each student, regardless of their requirements, has access to an environment specially suited to meet their developmental and educational needs.

Students who have been diagnosed as having learning disabilities, mental retardation, attention deficit disorders, pervasive developmental delays and other disabilities have found a place to learn and grow at FOCUS Learning Academy.

FOCUS Learning Academy takes the responsibility of educating our children seriously.  We know that educating students with learning disabilities and learning differences is a difficult task that does not often yield results in a short span of time.  Couple this difficulty with the transience and instability often associated with economically disadvantaged students and the task of assuring that students meet State standards becomes even more difficult.

The educational goals set forth by FOCUS Learning Academy in its charter are as follows:

·         Present a coordinated multisensory curriculum to meet the needs of learning different students.

·         Create an atmosphere conducive to emotional health-feelings of success, fairness and concern.

·         Prepare students to return to a conventional educational setting.

These goals stated 10 years ago continue to serve as our guideposts.  It is important to note that in some cases given the challenges we undertake that although our students' academic results have not always been stellar, we have seen consistent growth and improvement in the students we serve.
